Anárion
race: Dúnadan
lived: ? - 2nd 3440
The youngest son of Elendil, Anárion became the second King of Gondor with his brother Isildur. He was among the Faithful who rejected Sauron's call to war against the Kings. He commanded two of the nine ships in the fleet of mariners who escaped the cataclysmic collapse and disappearance of Numenor. In a terrifying gale the ships were carried above the waters and they became a part of the storm eventually landing on the shores at the Bay of Belfales. He and his brother Isildur then established the kingdom of Gondor. His main dwelling was in Minas Anor. During the time when Sauron attacked Gondor, Anarion defended Osgiliath. He was ultimately killed by a stone thrown from the Barad-dur.

Aragorn II
AKA: Elessar, Elfstone, The Renewer, Wing-foot, Strider, Longshanks, Isildur's Heir, Thorongil
race: Human (Dúnadan) male
lived: 3rd 2931 - 4th 120
Aragorn II, only child of Arathorn II and Gilraen. He was born with an extraordinary ancestral lineage that included contributions from the Maiar, the Edain and The Eldar. It was said that in adulthood, he of all the Men most closely resembled Elendil. Most of his childhood was spent with Gilraen in Rivendell following the death in an Orc raid of Arathorn II. Elrond reared him as a fosterson and gave him the suitable name of Estel (Hope). At 20 years of age he learned that his given name was Aragorn and that he was decended from royal heritage. Soon afterward he met and fell in love with Arwen. They shared distant ancestors most notably Melian, the Maia. Elrond disfavored their union but begrudgingly allowed that they could marry when Aragorn was crowned King of Gondor and Ardor. Aragorn left Rivendell and became Chieftan of the Rangers and was called Strider in the Shire. He became a consummate guide and tracker. He was honorable, honest and loyal. He was quick to assume leadership when needed and he displayed incredible courage. His greatest teachers were Elrond and Gandalf. He grew to amaze onlookers with his ability to successfully wield a sword and heal broken bodies. Aragorn received two ancient treasures. The shards of Narsil came from Elrond and the Elessar jewel from Arwen. In his quest for peace in Middle Earth he carried the reforged sword Anduril into many regions. Concealed by disguise he served the Kings of Rohan and Gondor. In other accomplishments he raided Umbar; captured Gollum; led the Fellowship out of Moria; fought at the Battle of Hornburg; searched the Palantir of Orthanc and traversed the Paths of the Dead calling the Dead to aid him in battle against the Corsairs. In Minas Tirith he saved the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and finally led the allied Host to the Black Gates of Mordor. After the War of the Rings he was crowned King Elessar Telcontar and married Arwen soon after. They had one son Eldarion who succeeded Aragorn as the Second King of the Reunited Kingdom. There were also several daughters born to this family.

B

Barliman Butterbur
AKA: Barley
race: Human male
lived: ?
Owner of the Prancing Pony tavern in Bree, Barley was tasked with the simple chore of sending an important letter from Gandalf to Frodo in the Shire. Well good ole Barley forgot about the letter, being pretty much wholly concerned with matters of the inn, and had the situation in not been so grim when Gandalf returned to Bree he might have been rougher on scolding Barley's memory. Luckily Barley presented the letter just in time to convince Frodo to allow Strider to help them, and that he (Gandalf) would meet them at Rivendell. Barliman was able to keep the Prancing Pony open during the ruffians flooding in after the Ring leaves the area. Chances are the Prancing Pony ended up doing quite well after Strider (a one time shady customer at the 'Pony) became king of Gondor and the rangers returned to the land to keep the roads and forests clear.

Beren was the only Elf or Man to cross the Ered Gorgoroth and Nan Dungortheb. In Doriath he fell in love with Lúthien after seeing her dance. They romanced in secret until Daeron told Thingol about their meetings. Thingol then sent Beren on an impossible mission to recover a Silmaril from the Iron Crown. Beren and Finrod Felagund, along with ten other people, were captured on their northward journey in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, where Finrod died trying to save Beren from werewolves. He was rescued by Luthien and Huan and they took a Silmaril from the Iron Crown, but afterwards Carcharoth bit off Beren's hand and the Silmaril in order to gain back the Silmaril. Beren was later killed by Carcharoth, but before dying was able to fulfill the Quest of the Silmaril by giving the Silmaril to Thingol.Luthien pled with Mandos to release Beren's spirit. Bilbo Baggins
AKA: none
race: Hobbit male
lived: 3rd 2890 - Immortal
Movie Cast: Sir Ian Holm
It would be the little halfling Bilbo that would usher in the final chapter of the Third Age of Middle-Earth by discovering the One Ring in Gollum's lair. Bilbo coveted his "secret ring" for years after he found and used it during the quest to oust Smaug the dragon. Indeed when Bilbo did use the ring during his quests, it was sure to be sending ripples of sensation to Sauron, aware that his evil treasure had at last been found and brought to the surface. For Bilbo the ring was the perfect treasure and he couldn't help slipping it on one last time at his 111th birthday party. Frodo would inherit Bag End of Hobbition and Gandalf made sure the One Ring was also passed on. Giving the ring to Frodo was not easy for him, but would pale in comparison with Frodo's struggle to let the ring go in the end. And thus with his memories, memoirs and fantasies of rings and elves and dragons Bilbo would retire in Rivendell and await Frodo's return before his final journey across the sea.

Boromir
AKA: none
race: Human (Southern Dúnedain) male
lived: 3rd 2978 - 3019
The proud heir to the steward of Gondor, Denethor II, his father. Boromir showed bravery in the face of the enemy and had won a great battle at Osgiliath and his fathers adoration. His brother Faramir and he both had dreams that prompted one should go to Rivendell to seek the answer. Faramir, being the younger, less impulsive, more wise, yet less favored son was destined to stay behind. Boromir would join the fellowship of the One Ring and leave Rivendell to escort the ringbearer south. Faced with mounting pressure as they neared Minas Tirith, his home in Gondor, he could not stand the ill logic of trashing the powerful ring and the idea of him returning to Minas Tirith victorious with such a "super weapon" drove him to a bottled frenzy. Finally he came upon Frodo in decision, and unable to sway him, leapt to seize the ring. Frodo escaped only by slipping the ring on which immediately got the attention of Sauron and his ever seeking eye. Boromir would die soon later in a last ditch effort to protect Merry and Pippin from a group of Saruman's orcs seeking hobbits who might have the ring. His body was given the best burial Aragorn and group could manage, and the canoe that bore him down the Anduin was fatefully seen by Faramir, who had heard Boromir's horn blow days ago.

lived: 3rd 2935 - 3019
26th ruler of Gondor Denethor II ruled from the white halls of Minis Tirith and suffered being so close to Mordor and Saurons evil realm. His core weakness was to choose to use the palantir of Minas Tirith to gaze the future and see events throughout his kingdom and abroad. For Sauron rules (almost completely) the world inside the crystal palantiri and by allowing Denethor some knowledge, he was able to also keep track of him and the kingdom of Gondor. The siege of Minas Tirith would have been a true test for any king, but with the loss of his son Boromir and with Faramir barely alive after being struck by a Nazgûl, Denethor slipped into a madness that was long in the knitting. Denethor had peered again into the palantir with fearful angst during the siege, and he beheld the great black war ships coming up the Anduin from the wild south, a sure end for Minas Tirith. With this maddening "knowledge" Denethor bade his servants build a funeral pyre for him and his remaining son and sole heir to the stewardship of Gondor, Faramir. He managed to get himself and Faramir soaked in oil, and only Beregond was willing to defy orders and hack Denethor's servants away from lighting the wood stack aflame. For Faramir was not dead, and he was loved as the true companion and leader that he was, but if it were not for Pippin warning and convincing Beregond to help, Denethor would have gone up in flames with his son. In the end it would only be Denethor who would burn alive, as Gandalf arrived in time to save Faramir who would recover and be able to hand the kingdom of Gondor onto it's rightful heir, Aragorn.

While Eärendil was at sea, Arvenien was attacked and ravaged by the sons of Fëanor, but with Ulmo's help Elwing was able to fly to him with her Silmaril and together they made it to Aman. There the Valar showed mercy on the peoples of Beleriand through Eärendil's valiant efforts, setting him, his ship, and the Silmaril in the sky as a sign of hope for those oppressed by the forces of evil. During the Last Alliance, Elrond was Gil-galad's herald and stood by him when he fell. He was entrusted by Gil-galad to bear the ring of fire, Vilya, greatest of the elven rings second only to the overwhelming power of the One Ring. Keeping himself and the ring safe from Sauron and hidden in Rivendell was of utmost importance in buying the last bit of time needed for the mission of the One Ring and the fellowship. Indeed Elrond played this important role while Gandalf cavorted about Middle-Earth on Shadowfax tackling the errands decided at the council of Elrond in Rivendell at the end of the Third Age. He was of great aid to the remaining Northern Dúnedain (rangers) and raised Aragorn as a true heir of Gondor should be. The son of Earendil and Elwig. His brother was Elros. Eomer was the son of Theodwyn and Eomund and nephew to King Theoden, but was treated as a son once the spell of Grima was removed from Theodens ears and the ride south to Minas Tirith began. Theoden named Eomer as his heir and 18th King of Rohan before dying upon the Pelennor Fields. Eomer was a good aid to Gandalf in monitoring the movements in the Rohan plains, as Grima had Theoden in his spell and it was not easy getting information from him. So excellent a defender of the borders of the Rohan, Eomer was not about to allow Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli run through the Rohan perusing orcs (already slain) without explanation. Unwavering to allow passage for the company until Aragorn revealed himself as the heir of Isildur and rightful ruler of Gondor. And there for a moment stood the two men that would lead Middle-Earth into the waning years of the Third Age.

Eowyn
AKA: Dernhelm, White Lady of Rohan
race: Human female
lived: 2995 - ?
Eowyn's brother Eomer would lead the kingly life she so desired. A beautiful woman of the Rohan she would not be left behind by the men to watch over the women and children left behind. Seeing Aragorn ride off to apparent death aggravated as well as inspired her. She wished for a rightful death as well and her strength was more than enough to vault herself into the battle group under the guise of Dernhelm. And it would be as Dernhelm that she would lend a hand to Merry who also found himself stranded with no one willing to bear him south with the army. So south they went, and indeed unbeknowenced to them their paths would be inexorably entwined. It would be the two of them, in a field of men who would take the Lord of the Nazgûl down. For he could not be smote by any man, and therefore his fear upon the battlefield was immense. Eowyn cast aside her Dernhelm mask and stood up to the Lord of the Nazgûl upon the carnage of his fell beast. Even then she would have indeed been felled by the Lord if it were not for Merry shoving a blade into his back. In that moment Eowyn summoned her last remaining effort and drove her sword, wielded by no "man", all the way up thorough the evil creatures invisible body. Both Merry and Eowyn would pay for their slaying of the Lord in sheer pain and clouded comas brought about by the Black Breath of that the Nazgûl Lord was steeped in, and her broken arm. Aragorn would save her, as it was destined the true King would also be a healer, and against such a fell wound only a destined healer would have given aid. Upon her waking she found her healer had also held her heart, but she realized it was his image, not him that she had fallen for. If it were not for Faramir's own falling in love with the sight of her she would have suffered much greater depression. As it was she saw in Faramir's eyes the love she so wanted to be a part of, and so then she became the Lady of Ithilien, and content wife of Faramir.

F

Faramir
AKA: Steward of Gondor, Lord of Emyn Arnen, Prince of Ithilien
race: Human (Dúnadan) male
lived: 3rd 2995 - 4th 82
Brother of Boromir and son of Denethor II the steward of Minas Tirith. Faramir was put in his brother's shadow by the shining admiration of his father. He took to ranging in the Ithilien fields east of Minas Tirith seeking the host of Mordor to slay, keeping clear of the relationship that did not include him. He fostered his own relationship with Gandalf, whom he respected fully. It was Faramir with a group of his rangers that were the last friendly beings to see Frodo and Sam before their climb into Mordor. In the secret waterfall hideout Henneth Annun Frodo tried not to tell Faramir of his brothers rash grasp at Isildurs bane, but Faramir could read Frodo's face and he knew his brother all too well. But Faramir knew that if he took Isildurs Bane (the ring, as accidentally pointed out by Mr. Samwise) would only perpetuate war and the current menace. So Faramir saw the two hobbits off on their errand that would take them east into Mordor, and allowed Gollum to live, even though he had witnessed the secret location of Henneth Annun. Upon the news of his brother Boromir's death, which came to him unexpectedly in the form of his brothers floating burial, Faramir knew his fathers wroth would be great and so he would be the last to ride through the gates of Minas Tirith. He was waylaid before the gates and Gandalf saved him with a shaft of light to the Nazgûl on him, but the sickness of the Black Breath was upon Faramir and he slipped into the disruptive coma that follows. During the coma his life would be saved by Pippen and his loyal friend and soldier Beregond, for Denethor his father had gone mad during the siege and was bent upon lighting them aflame in some twisted sympathetic funeral pyre. Upon his healing by Aragorn of the breath, and as the surviving heir (Denethor set himself aflame) he was able to hand the stewardship of Gondor to Aragorn son of Arathorn the frightful king of Gondor. He reworked the Tengwar writing system, and learned to create crystals and gems, including the Silmarilli and possibly also the Palantíri. Melkor manipulated Fëanor into dissension against his half-brother Fingolfin because he coveted the Silmarils. He was the first to name Melkor "Morgoth".Fëanor turned against Fingolfin for a time and distrusted the Valar. Finally he saw through Melkor but never regained his trust in the Valar and became possessive of the Silmarils, refusing to give them up to help when the Two Trees were poisoned. He resolved to kill Melkor after learning that he had murdered Finwë, uttering the Oath of Fëanor which later doomed him and his sons. He often overstepped himself and while he made significant achievements, his pride and recklessness caused much destruction and sorrow. With each step closer to the fires of the volcano Orodruin that formed the One Ring for evil intent, the weight would grow for Frodo. Add to this the constant threat of Gollum and the Nazgûl and you've got a grim journey. Indeed if it were not for the aid of Samwise, Gandalf, Aragorn and others the mission of the Fellowship would surely have failed for the true weight of the ring is greater than any one person to carry. It is through this journey that Frodo sacrifices an easy life at Bag End for a task that would surely end in tormented death or as soul lost to the evil of the Ring. As it is with hobbits, innocence fed curiosity and Frodo began the journey unaware of the true dangers and soul decision that he would be facing. Nonetheless with Samwise ever at his side they had as good a chance of getting the ring into Mordor as any men or elves, and Gandalf knew this. For he was the one who orchestrated the movement of the One Ring from Bilbo to Frodo for its safe keeping and journey to Rivendell. Frodo's acceptance to bear the One Ring to it's destruction in the fires of Orodruin began his mission that would end in a short life here on Middle-Earth. Tormented all the way, and succumbing to the ring at last he slipped it on inside the Sammath Naur, for it was inside that forge that the power of the ring was the greatest. The final curse he had laid upon Gollum in the name of the Ring on the slopes of Orodruin had spawned the power struggle to the brink within his mind. But alas Gollum was driven to a frenzy as well and biting the finger with the ring from Frodo's hand he leapt about in sheer joy and in that moment slipped himself into the crack of doom and was disintegrated with the One Ring. Frodos great quest was complete and saved in the last by Gandlaf and Gwaihir he would slowly recover, but the task had been a great weight, and the wound from the Lord of the Nazgûl's knife would not ever fully heal when he lived upon Middle-Earth. AKA: Olorin (birth name), Gandalf the Grey, Gandalf the White, Mithrandir, 'Grey Pilgrim', Grey Wanderer, Incanus, , Tharkun, Gandalf Greyhame, Stormcrow, Lathspell, White Rider, Enemy of Sauron
race: Istari male
lived: Immortal
Movie Cast: Sir Ian McKellen
Gandalf the wizard was the last Istari to really understand the danger of the One Ring and actively pursue the mission to destroy it. Since the One Ring had been found it was only a matter of time before it found its way to Sauron its true master, and the fate of Middle-Earth would be doomed to darkness. Saruman the White (another Istari wizard) imprisoned Gandalf the Grey atop the tower of Orthanc, and hoped it would buy him time in his own scramble to grasp the One Ring and take it for his own. Gandalf escaped Orthanc and averted death as well later in the Mines of Moria facing the great Balrog to allow the fellowship to escape the pursers. He would be reborn as Gandalf the White, Sarumans color, for now Gandalf's power was much greater than Saruman's. Leadership of the Istari wizard Order was in dispute and before the tower of Orthanc Gandalf the White smote Sarumans staff and cast him out of the Order. Then Gandalf the White would ride his horse Shadowfax, fastest horse in Middle-Earth, south to Minas Tirith and stand alone against the Lord of the Nazgûl at it's great gates. Without Gandalf's power to guide the men of Minas Tirith the city would have sure fallen.
Gandalf's council to Aragorn and the Fellowship led to the destruction of the One Ring and thus the only way to defeat the dark lord Sauron. Among his council not the least of which was the to spare Gollum, and indeed without him alive in the end the mission would have failed. Gandalf had been about Middle-Earth for well over a thousand years pursuing the undoing of the dark lord, and in the time Gandalf had developed some human qualities such as pleasure in a good smoke and fireside chat that belied his awesome power. He was a missionary of light sent to lead the people of Middle-Earth to overthrow the darkness. And when it was at last purged, he sailed with the rest of the Keepers of the Rings near the end of the Third Age into everlasting light.

Gimli
AKA: Elf-friend, Lock-bearer, Lord of the Glittering Caves
race: Dwarf male
lived: 3rd 2879 - ?
Movie Cast: John Rhys-Davies
A Dwarf of Durin's line, son to Glóin. He was chosen to represent the Dwarves in the mission to destroy the One Ring. Legolas the elf and he would become very close friends and a friendship so strong between an Elf and a Dwarf could not be remembered. At the entrance into Lorien it was only Legolas that Gimli asked be blindfolded to enter if he must be. And when he was able to remove the blindfolds he was the first dwarf to set eyes on the beauty of Lorien since Durin's Day. It would be that Gimli would fall deeply in love with the Galadriel the elf queen. When she asked Gimli what gift she might give to him, after handing out magical items to much of the group, he merely asked for a strand of her beautiful hair. More astonished and flattered than she had been in a very long time, she gracefully game Gimli three strands of her long golden hair. That gift would be a token of friendship between Dwarves and Elves at the end of their time here on Middle-Earth, and would be a token of love for Gimli and his lady of the wood. The mutual trust between Legolas and Gimli became a backbone for the Fellowship, and without that bond the pursuit of Merry and Pippin and walking headlong into the Paths of the Dead would have proven nearly impossible for Gimli. Legolas and Gimli kept a running tally of foes slain during the battle at Helms Deep, and when they got separated and Gimli announced upon his return a score of 42, Legolas admitted to a score of 41 which makes you wonder if the depth of Legolas' friendship would be deep enough for the Elf to fib. Gimli and his ax would hew a path aside Aragorn and Legolas throughout the War of the Rings and he would live through the Third Age and sail across the sea west with Legolas in the Fourth Age 120.

In the First Age 496, Glaurung led the battle against Nargothrond. He caused great destruction to many lands and peoples, including Eithel Ivrin and Talath Dirnen. Gollum
AKA: Trahald (birth name), Smeagol, Her Sneak, Slinker, Stinker
race: Hobbit (Stoor) male
lived: 3rd 2430 -3019
Smeagol was once a young boy of hobbit-like folk living near the great river Anduin long ago. Upon one fishing journey on the Anduin his cousin Deagol spotted something on the bottom of the river. Pulling it out Deagol found it to be a beautiful gold band, and when Smeagol's eyes set upon it, he had to have it. So it was that upon that bank Smeagol strangled Deagol for the ring, and when he laid it upon his finger, all the reasons why he did so became apparent. For it was the One Ring wrought by the dark lord Sauron ages ago, and within its small golden circlet resided power far beyond the reckoning of mortals. So excited was the ring for being discovered and killed over, that it overwhelmed Smeagol the moment he slipped it on. The ring would twist Smeagol into a wretched creature bent upon the worship of the ring as his own precious. Those that saw this wretched transformation in Smeagol began calling him Gollum for the gulping sound he made since under the influence of the Ring. Gollum would eventually retreat to the Misty Mountains and find a cave to hide from the sun, now shunned by him, and to be alone with his precious. The Ring did not like being hid away from it's true master Sauron, and given any opportunity of being found by someone other than the covetous Gollum was the little Rings silent goal. That opportunity game when Bilbo fell into Gollum's lair when the Dwarf company was crossing the Misty Mountains on their way east. Bilbo found the One Ring sitting on upon the ground of Gollum's cave and when he discovered that by putting it on it made himself invisible he secretly waited for Gollum to show him the way out. To Gollum's complete and utter dismay he had lost his precious, and now a hobbit had his Ring. Gollum would race across Middle-Earth in search of his precious Ring, and he finally caught up with the Fellowship near Lorien. When he finally caught up with Sam and Frodo on their way towards Mordor to destroy the Ring, Frodo bade Sam not to kill him as per Gandalf's council. And so Gollum acted as their guide into Mordor, but he had his own plan and eventually sprung his trap. But they would struggle past his horrible trap and Gollum would continue tracking Frodo and Sam all the way to the edge of the Crack of Doom where the One Ring was wrought by Sauron. Here in a frenzy he leapt upon Frodo, who had succumbed to the power of the Ring and slipped it on, but Gollum's sharp teeth bit the finger from Frodo's hand and leaping with glee after finally touching his ring after so long, he slipped and fell into the Crack of Doom. This brought about the end of the dark lord Sauron, as nearly all his power and structures were built with the power of the One Ring.

Gríma
AKA: Wormtongue, Worm
race: Human (Rohan) male
lived: ? - 3rd 3019
An agent of Saruman used for the control of King Theoden of the Rohan, Grima gained the trust of the King and became a very effective mole of Saruman's. It was not until Gandalf arrived to council Theoden that Grima was challenged. He squirmed and spat as Gandalf revealed his true nature to the drained Theoden. The King cast out Grima and bade his guards to give him leave to run back sniveling to his master Saruman with the news of Theoden's reawakening. Grima found Isengard flooded and Treebeard allowed him to wade to the steps of Orthanc to be with his wretched Master. Soon Gandalf and the group faced Saruman and Grima at the foot of Orthanc and when Gandalf had smote Saruman's staff and removed his power, Grima was so upset he threw the crystal Palantir out of the high window above hoping to kill Gandalf. A final blunder, the ball survived the fall and missed all the company, but was picked up by Pippin who would later regret that. But Grima would also regret throwing the Palantir out and Saruman came down hard on the small man afterwards. So hard indeed that after the years together and the miles traveled, Grima would slit Saruman's throat in the Shire when it finally seemed all was lost, and was then felled by hobbit arrows.

He planted a seedling of the White Trees in Minas Anor in memory of Anarion, and assumed rulership of Arnor after his father died. On the way there, however, his party was attacked by Orcs. His friendship with Gimli of the Fellowship would be legendary. Legolas' received as his gift from Lorien the great bow of Galadriel. This bow in the hands of Legolas was a very dangerous weapon, and alongside Gimli and Aragorn few of Saurons minions could challenge them. Upon the Paths of the Dead even Gimli was scared to go into the undermountain passage, and yet Legolas did not fear human undead. A time when a dwarf stepped back to going underground when an Elf stepped forward was not remembered. And so Legolas and Gimli would teach each other much, and after the great battle of the Ring, they rode off together to explore Fangorn forest and the Glittering Caves. Later Legolas led many Elves of the Mirkwood to Ithilien on the border of the now fallen Mordor, where they restored the beauty and abundance of the war-torn land. After the death of Aragorn, Legolas sailed over the Sea with Gimli.
Lord of the Nazgûl

High Nazgûl
race: once human, now ringwraith
lived: 2nd 1600 - 3rd 3019
Once the great witch-king of Angmar in the northern wastes, this man was to become the right hand servant to Sauron. He would be overtaken completely by the most powerful of the nine rings of power bestowed upon men, and so driven by the One Ring forger Sauron. When the One Ring was lost by Isildur in the great river Anduin, it became their mission to find it and return it to their master. Once the ring had been found, they would ride like the wind to whence it had been located and retrieve it at any cost. So many ages under the power of Sauron and the One Ring had made all the nine man ring-bearers into wraithlike beings. Their bodies no longer visible to the normal eye, only the black cloaks they wore suggested their original human form. The Lord of the Nazgûl and his other ringwraiths would catch up with Frodo and the One Ring on Weathertop, and was able to stab Frodo with a morgul knife that would reach his heart and convert him to a ringwraith as well. But Frodo made it to Rivendell where he was partially cured of the knife wound by Elrond . The Lord of the Nazgûl and all the nine ringwraiths would be swept away at the Ford of Bruinen but would return later with winged steeds. The Lord would face Gandalf at the gate of Minas Tirith, but distracted by the arrival of Theoden and the Riders of Rohan he turned to face the new enemy. Theoden would die to the Lords' winged beast, and he smote fear into all men upon the battlefield, for it was decreed long ago that he would be killed by no man. So stepped forward Eowyn the woman, and the Lord came down hard upon her shield arm shattering it and the shield. But just then another non-man, a hobbit named Meriadoc drove a Westron blade deep into his back, and Eowyn took advantage and slew the Lord of the Nazgûl on the fields of Pelennor.

Meriadoc Brandybuck
AKA: Kalimac (birth name), Merry, Master Holbytla, Holdwine of the Shire, Master Perian, Meriadoc the Magnificent
race: Hobbit male
lived: 3rd 2982 - 4th 65
Meriadoc, or Merry, was a Brandybuck hobbit living near the Brandywine river, and it was on it's shores before Farmer Maggot's wagon hiding his friends, that he joined the Ring-Bearer Frodo his friend. It was a good meeting and he was a welcome companion. Merry would partner with Pippin for most of the adventure beginning with convincing Elrond to let them go along with the Fellowship. A good decision it was, for the two hobbits would rustle up an army of Ents and play major roles in the War of the Rings drama. Merry, like Pippin, would be swept up with the kingly nature of things and made kings men. Merry would take up with King Theoden of the Rohan, and ride with him whenever possible. When it became apparent that he would not be riding into battle due to the small size of his pony he was put in a horrible quandary. Were it not for the lady Eowyn's similar situation no one might have borne Merry south to war. But in her Dernhelm guise Eowyn rode Merry south with the army, and the two of them would become heroes. For it would be Merry that would deliver the defiling blow the the Lord of the Nazgûl thus saving Eowyn's life and sealing the fate of the Nazgûl to Eoywn's sword. Both would suffer the Black Breath sickness from the scuffle with the Nazgûl Lord. But Aragorn would show his kingly powers of healing and bring him from the brink of death. After the War of the Rings, he was knighted in Rohan, and rewarded for his valor. At his father's death, he became Master of Buckland, and later made a Counselor of the North-kingdom. He then married Estella Bolger. He and Pippin later resigned their posts and rode to join their friends in Gondor and Rohan. Both died a few years later and were buried in the House of Kings.

After the fall of Nargothrond, Morwen insisted on traveling there to find news of Turin. This was not a grave decision, for her party was scattered by Glaurung, and she proceeded to wander distraught for 6 years. Finally she was reunited with Hurin on the day of her death, at the Stone of the Hapless. She was laid to rest beside her son.

P

Peregrin Took
AKA: Pippin, Ernil I Pheriannath
race: Hobbit male
lived: 3rd 2990 - 4th 65
Pippin was a hobbit and friend of Frodo. He and Merry convinced the council to allow them to accompany Frodo and Sam on the quest to destroy the Ring. With Gandalf's approval Elrond allowed them to go along, a decision Pippin would later regret in his darkest hour. Pippin and Merry are stolen from the Fellowship by a band of orcs and driven across the plains of Rohan getting ever closer to Isengard and Saruman their master. After such an arduous journey for a hobbit it would be Pippin who would convince Grishnakh that he and Merry had the One Ring, and he should steal them away and claim his prize for Sauron. Grishnakh would be shot by the surrounding Rohirrim and Pippin and Merry would lie still until they could creep away safe from the battle soon to ensue. They would escape to Fangorn forest and on a cliff embankment overlooking the forest they would stumble upon great Fangorn himself AKA Treebeard. Treebeard would replenish them with his great earth draughts which grew the hobbits hair and filled their bodies with warm nature. Pippin and Merry would tell Treebeard of the Fellowship and Saruman, and he would assemble the Ent army to attack Isengard, for Ent's did not take lightly to neighbors such as Saruman gathering orcs.
After Treebeard and the Ent's destruction of Isengard, and when Gandalf at last challenged Saruman to come forth, Pippin was there and ran to take the Palantir thrown from the window by Grima in his anger. The Palantir allowed the viewing of things many leagues away and just by touching it Pippin was infected with its power. Pippin would sneak over to Gandalf later that night, and steal a look into the wonderfully black crystal ball. But Sauron rules the world of the Palantir and he believed it to be Saruman reporting back as to news of the One Ring. Pippin was struck still by the eye of Sauron, but would recover slowly with Gandalf's help. Pippin would go on to Minas Tirith and as with Merry, become a Kings man. He would watch over King Denethor II, as Denethor initially took kindly to him as he had been with Boromir his heir when he died and brought news of him. But Pippin's true task would be to deny Denethor and save Faramir from being burned alive by Denethor in his madness during the siege of Minas Tirith. After the War of the Ring, he was knighted in Gondor and made a King's messenger. He helped the Hobbits mobilize against the ruffians who had gathered in the Shire since their absence under the Chief. Both Pippin and Merry died later in Gondor, and were buried with great honor in Minas Tirith.

S

Samwise Gamgee
AKA: Banazir
race: Hobbit male
lived: 3rd 2980 -
Samwise, or Sam as he was called by his loved master Frodo, was a simple hobbit with a big heart and a poets passion. While it would seem Sam plays a servant role to Frodo during the quest to destroy the One Ring, their true relationship before and after was one of equal friendship. Very different from eachother in person and as such created a duo that even the dark lord Sauron could not have imagined could be so determined. Samwise saved Frodo time and again from unceasing perils since they broke from the Fellowship in haste on the shores of the Anduin. Gollum would overtake them but be caught and used as their guide into Mordor. Sam would never trust Gollum and indeed Gollum knew Sam was his biggest obstacle between him and the Ring. When Gollum led Frodo and Sam into his trap in Shelob's lair, it was Sam the hobbit that stepped forward to challenge the great spider Shelob, last spawn of Ungoliant. Shelob's underestimation of Sam and his wielded elf blade Sting was her undoing, for she spiked herself upon his outstretched stout body ending in a fell point. He had nearly slain such a great creature as even the great elf warrior he was believed to be by the orcs would have quailed. Believing his master to be dead from Shelob's bite he struggled with the decision on weather to die there next to his master or to press on with the Ring. When he slipped the ring on, given no other option at the moment, he entered the etheric world of the ring. Amazingly Saurons ring had little effect upon Sam as compared to Frodo. For just as Tom Bombadil was able to defy the power of the Ring, so could Samwise be unaffected due to the simple fact that he cared not for dark lords or invisibility or precious magic rings of power. He cared about his master and the mission and there being such a simple head upon his shoulders, there was no room for Sauron to infect his mind with the Ring's dark power. But with the power of the Ring Sam was able to save his master from the tower Cirith Ungol amongst the kin-slain orcs. Frodo demanded the Ring back, and so it was they pressed onto Mt. Doom, and ran again into the pursuing Gollum. The few times Sam had the opportunity to put an end to Gollum, he followed his master Frodo's orders and spared his pathetic life. Good thing too because even Sam could not have talked his master down once he succumbed to the One Ring in the Sammath Naur. And so Sam stood aside his master throughout the quest, and in the end they held each other awaiting their fiery destruction, and only to be saved by Gandalf and Gwaihir from the side of the spewing Mt. Doom. After the destruction of the One Ring Sam returned to the Shire with the other hobbits and freed it from the scourge of the Chief's men. He found Rose Cotton there, waiting for him all along, and with her he found great happiness in marriage and in raising their 13 children. Because he bore the One Ring during his time on Middle-Earth, he was allowed to sail west across the sea after the passing of Rosie to see his Frodo again at last.

Saruman
AKA: Saruman the White, Saruman the Wise, Curunir, 'The Man of Skill', Sharkey
race: Istari male
lived: ? - 3rd 3019
Saruman the White was the Istari head of the White Council and the greatest of the Order of Wizards in Middle-Earth. Sent by the Valar in the Third Age 1000 the Order was to unite and council the peoples to overthrow the dark lord Sauron. They all took the form of old men wielding staffs that gave them their great power on Middle-Earth. When the One Ring was forged it too became the source of power for Sauron the dark lord. Saruman's leadership of the Order was but a face as he aggressively pursued his own private quest for the One Ring driven by the exposure to Sauron in his Palantir. Sauron's desire to have the one ring infected his own power and he too decided that he must have it. And he almost might have had it for Saruman had a way with words you might say, and he used this charming power as his outward face to all but the orcs and men hired by him to retrieve the Ring. Anyone retrieving that Ring would then rule Middle-Earth with its tremendous power especially if it were found and claimed by an Istari of the Order. And so his passion to claim the ring drove him to dark deeds in the tower Orthanc of Isengard which he claimed as his own. But the orcs he would hire to do his bidding would have a backlash effect on Saruman for they would hew the trees of the forest liberally with their axes and burn asleep Ent folk. This slowly angered Treebeard and the very hobbits that Saruman's orcs had stolen escaped into the nearby Fangorn forest and as destiny would have it they would run into Treebeard. This in the end would stir the remaining Ent folk of the forest, and all trees that would awaken and help reclaim Isengard in the name of nature. And this they did, for Saruman's orcs were away in the brutal battle at Helm's deep and those orcs as well would find their fate among the Ent's. And the Ent revolt would mark the end of Saruman's reign. Gandalf would pay him a visit, but it would be Gandalf the White, not Grey that bade him come to his door at Orthanc the very tower he had imprisoned Gandalf atop. Saruman reluctantly came out, and after failing to charm Gandalf he was cast out of the Order and his staff shattered. Even his last coveted artifact the Palantir was thrown from the tower by Grima, apparently the only item of sufficient weight near him he could use to kill Gandalf below. The very Palantir that had ensnared Saruman in Saurons desire. Saruman left Isengard and made for the Shire, for he had other plans to make the hobbits return a nasty one. And so he did, the damage to the Shire by Sharkey (as Saruman was known in the Shire) and his minions would take years to regrow and rebuild. But in the end Frodo deified Saruman's last charm attempt and cast him out of the Shire. Saruman barked to Grima one to many times, and as they moved to leave Grima slit his throat and bolted only to be shot dead by the hobbits.

Sauron
AKA:Maiar of Aule, Lord of the Rings, Ringmaker, Gorthaur the Cruel, Sauron the Deceiver, The Master, Dark Lord of Mordor, The Enemy, The Black One, Lidless Eye, Red Eye, Necromancer, Nameless One, etc.
race: Ainu male
lived: Immortal
Sauron was the Great Deceiver of Middle-Earth and since his corruption by Melkor early in his existence his focus from then on would be one solely of evil. Sauron being originally of the Maiar had great power as a form on Middle-Earth which he pursued relently. He loved living and breathing upon the land that spawned man and orc, for he seeked ever to become their master. He was a great Ainur (angel) that came to disrupt the fulfillment of the song of creation. Sauron and all his minions worshiped Melkor and Sauron became the chief of his servants working to snuff Light upon Middle-Earth. A master of wizardry he bested Finrond of the elves and and slew all his kin. And when Luthien attacked to rescue Beren Sauron was destroyed in his werewolf form and escaped in vampire form. He then surrendered the tower and fled in vampire form to Taur-nu-Fuin, remaining there in a passive state until the end of the First Age.
He had many opportunities to repent and purify himself, but his ego wouldn't allow such humiliation and embarrassment. He hid away in darkness in Middle-earth to avoid such transformations. During the long millennia of the Dark Years, he corrupted many races of Men. With the Gwaith-i-Mirdain Elves of Eregion, (whom he misled), he forged the Rings of Power, hoping to enslave the Free Peoples. He put much of his power into the One Ring, with which he completed the Barad-dur. He then gathered evil in numbers, using Orcs and other monsters of Morgoth and ruled many great areas by force and terror. Eventually his own evil caught up with him when, during the invasion on Aman, the Valar called on Iluvatar and his body was destroyed to the point of never being able to appear pleasant again.
He destroyed the White Tree, attempting to take with it the Light of Aman. Soon after, Sauron lost the power of the One Ring when Isildur cut off his finger, taking the Ring. Hell-bent on recovering the Ring in the Third Age, he sought to reclaim his base of power based on the Ring. He hid his identity and became known as the Necromancer or the Sorcerer of Dol Guldur. Most likely he released the Great Plague, paving the way with the help of the Nazgûl for Sauron to claim Mordor.
Gandalf and Elrond realized that the existence of the One Ring was giving Sauron power, even though he no longer wore it. And so the Quest to destroy the Ring began and Frodo was the volunteer to complete the task. Once the One Ring was destroyed, the Nazgûl were destroyed and Sauron weakened so thoroughly that he was never able to take shape again. In the Third Age he appeared mostly in the form of an Eye, although sometimes he appeared as a Man with black, burning skin.

Thorin and Company
Organized by Thorin II, this was an expedition planned to recover the treasure from Smaug in Erebor. The hoard was recovered and Erebor renewed, but the journey had a greater outcome because 1) Bilbo found the One Ring along the way. 2) Gandalf found Glamdring, and used it to kill the Great Goblin of the Misty Mountains, and 3) Smaug was destroyed. This in effect removed the greatest force of evil in that area of the World.
The Hobbit is the journey of Thorin and Company. The members of the expedition were Thorin, Dwalin, Fili, Kili, Dori, Ori, Nori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Bilbo Baggins.

Tom Bombadil
AKA: Iarwain Ben-adar, the First, Forn, Orald
race: unknown
lived: ?
Tom Bombadil master of the Old Forest and master over himself as well. Frodo and Samwise would luckily run into this master while fervently yelling for help, as Merry and Pippin had been swallowed partly by a powerful Ent called Old Man Willow. Tom reacted to the little hobbits surprisingly and went to extract Merry and Pippin. Then the hobbits had a meal and fireside talk to cherish for a lifetime. Tom Bombadil was master of the forest just east of the Shire, but he has been master since before the trees! He and the hobbits shared stories till the cows came home, and eventually Frodo showed Tom the One Ring. Tom took a look at Sauron's powerful creation, and in blatant disregard of its "power" Tom slipped it on his pinkie and he did not vanish. Instead he slipped it off and threw it in the air, and vanish the One Ring he did. Frodo burst out but not before to manifested the Ring again in his hand extended to Frodo. The One Ring had no power over Tom, not in the Old Forest and probably not anywhere. For it would seem the One Ring just magnifies thoughts, fears, and dreams already present in the wielder. Tom had no thoughts of the fallen angel Sauron or his dark contrivances or more importantly of assuming a ruling role of any kind. Instead his thoughts were upon Goldberry and breakfast tomorrow and the foraging he would do, skipping about in his yellow boots. Tom gave Frodo and the hobbits a song to sing when in trouble, and as fate would have it very soon Frodo sang the very song in a dark Barrow Wight's cave. Tom was summoned and sang the Wight away, and got the hobbits back upon the road. So powerful was Tom that he was brought up as someone they might give the One Ring to, so that it was safe from Sauron. But Gandalf pointed out that Tom's power resides in the Old Forest, and his carefree attitude would not be the best for someone hiding an item he cares not about. And so Frodo would head bear the great ring, and Tom would continue his wonderful days in the forest and with his beloved Goldberry.
